What type of grooming does the Havapoo require?
The grooming needs of a Havapoo require attention to keep its coat looking nice and healthy. Since this breed is hypoallergenic, it has a curly or wavy coat that doesn’t shed but is prone to matting and tangling. Therefore, regular grooming is important and can be easily done at home. It’s also essential to get the puppy used to brushing early. We start this training while they are still with us. As Havapoo is a mixed breed, it’s challenging to predict exactly how their coat will look until after they shed their puppy coat, which usually occurs around 6 months of age. During this period, their coat may become extra tangled for a few weeks, so daily brushing and using a dematting tool are recommended. I usually suggest visiting a groomer during this time, as they can provide advice specific to your puppy’s coat. It’s also best to get them accustomed to grooming visits early, so a first trim can be done as early as 3-4 months.
Daily Care: It’s recommended to brush their coat a few times a week, especially on more vulnerable areas like the armpits, around the ears, and the stomach.
Bathing and Drying: Havapoos are usually bathed every 3-4 weeks to keep their coat clean and soft. After bathing, it’s essential to dry their coat thoroughly to prevent matting.
Trimming: Trimming is recommended to make grooming easier, at least every 3-4 months.
Ear and Nail Care: Since they may have longer hair in their ears, this should be cleaned regularly, and excess hair should be removed (this doesn’t apply to all dogs, but it’s good to be aware). Nails should also be trimmed regularly, as long nails can cause discomfort for the dog.
Around the Eyes: In rare cases, discoloration can occur around the eyes. As a breeder, I try to consider this in my breeding work and avoid it, but even with careful breeding, it’s challenging to eliminate completely, as it’s common in both parent breeds and can appear from more distant ancestry. If your Havapoo has discoloration around the eyes, it’s recommended to trim the hair around the eyes and wipe the area with a damp cloth once a day.
Regular grooming is not only aesthetic but also important for their health, as it keeps the Havapoo’s coat and skin healthy and comfortable. Overall, their coat is not difficult to maintain, but it does require some attention.
